Stafford Gatehouse Theatre is set to showcase a groundbreaking play, 'Wake Up Sammy', written, directed, and performed by individuals in recovery from addiction. This unique production, brought to life by the community organization Detox Factor, tells the story of a fictional character, Sammy, and his personal struggles with addiction. The play offers a powerful message, as the director, Cara Cox, shares her own experiences, stating, 'I, myself, lived experience, so I spent many years in addiction and many years out of addiction.'
The creative process behind 'Wake Up Sammy' is just as inspiring. Cox elaborates on the transformative journey of recovery, saying, 'Recovery isn't about stopping drinking and using, it's finding a new life of meaning and purpose.' This is further emphasized by Paul O'Brian, a recovering alcoholic who plays the main role of Sammy. O'Brian reflects on his own journey, 'Everyday I don't have a drink is a good day really. It starts with stopping the drink, but that's only part of recovery and the rest of it is just learning how to live.'
The play's debut at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre is a significant milestone, as it provides a platform for individuals with firsthand experience of addiction to share their stories. This production not only highlights the challenges faced by those struggling with addiction but also celebrates the power of recovery and the diverse paths to finding meaning and purpose. The question remains: How can we support and learn from those who have walked this path, and what insights can we gain from their creative expressions?
