Liverpool University's Architecture School: A New Vision Unveiled

The highly anticipated architectural masterpiece, Liverpool University's new School of Architecture, is almost complete, and the first images have been revealed! This project is a bold statement in the heart of the city, transforming a former car park into a vibrant hub for creative minds.

The design includes a substantial 3,000m² three-story extension, providing a modern addition to the school's existing facilities. But here's where it gets interesting: the project also involves a sensitive remodeling of the historic Leverhulme Building, a 1930s gem designed by Charles Reilly, later updated in the 1980s. And that's not all; the neighboring Georgian terrace is also part of this ambitious plan.

In 2019, O'Donnell + Tuomey emerged as the unanimous choice for this prestigious project, beating 18 other renowned practices in a rigorous two-stage selection process. The judging panel, led by architecture critic Kenneth Frampton, included prominent figures like Tate director Maria Balshaw and architect Michael Wilford. This decision sparked excitement and curiosity among the architectural community.

What sets this project apart is the inclusive approach to decision-making. Marco Iuliano, a driving force behind the competition, emphasized the involvement of students and staff from the outset, stating, 'It has been a constant workshop... a unique aspect in architectural education.' This collaborative process ensures the new school reflects the needs and aspirations of its users.

The extension offers a versatile space with studios, exhibition areas, teaching rooms, offices, and even a café. Liverpool City Council approved the plans in 2022, and the public will soon get a chance to explore this architectural wonder during the AJ Small Projects 2026 Award event in April.

Controversy Corner: Some may argue that the selection process favored a more traditional architectural style, while others might praise the judges for their forward-thinking choice. What's your take on the design and the selection process? Are you team 'Classic Charm' or 'Modern Marvel'?
