Heyo Myo: A Holistic Approach to Healing
In the world of healthcare, where specialization often reigns supreme, there are practitioners who defy easy categorization. Meet Jim O'Connell, a myotherapist, a title that might elicit a blank stare but quickly transforms into understanding once the concept is explained. With a unique blend of physiotherapy and remedial massage, Jim offers a holistic approach to healing, focusing on the person as a whole, not just their pain.
The Art of Myotherapy
Myotherapy, as Jim explains, is a hands-on practice that treats "pain, joint dysfunction, and muscle imbalance." It takes a comprehensive view, considering a person's history, current lifestyle, work, old injuries, stress levels, nervous system, hormonal changes, posture, and movement through the joints. This holistic perspective sets it apart from traditional physiotherapy, which often focuses more narrowly on the source of pain.
"Myotherapy is more hands-on than traditional physio, with a strong emphasis on remedial massage," Jim says. "But it's more clinical because we identify the main contributor to the pain and then introduce long-term changes through stabilization, rehabilitation, and maintenance."
A Coastal Haven for Healing
Jim and his family made a bold move from Melbourne to Kiama, New South Wales, over three years ago, seeking a sea change after Victoria's extensive COVID-19 lockdowns. This move led him to establish Heyo Myo in the building that once housed the town's squash courts. The location is not just a coincidence; it's a strategic choice.
"I've seen a few clients who used to play squash here," Jim notes. "The most common injuries I treat are back, neck, and shoulder pain, in that order. Being on the coast, we have a lot of surfers, and I frequently treat shoulder injuries, which often manifest as neck pain."
A Journey of Discovery
Jim's interest in the human body and its intricacies began early, sparked by repeated injuries as a sports-mad teenager. "I had my fair share of injuries, knee surgeries, and found myself in a world of doctors, surgeries, and allied health," he recalls. A good osteopath played a pivotal role in managing his injuries, and this experience inspired him to empower and educate others to manage their injuries effectively.
"I give them the tools, and they do the work through rehabilitation and clinical exercise prescription," Jim says. "It's astonishing how much change you can make in just 60 minutes. That's why I love what I do."
Jim's career path has been a journey of discovery and reinvention. With a commerce degree from Sydney University, he initially worked in a corporate setting. However, his true calling lay in holistic healing.
"I realized that sitting at a desk wasn't for me," he says. "So, I pursued a diploma in remedial massage, worked alongside an osteopath and chiropractor, and then took a break to travel with my wife. When COVID hit, I pivoted again and began studying for an advanced diploma in myotherapy."
A Coastal Lifestyle
The decision to move to Kiama was influenced by a desire for a coastal lifestyle and a small-town feel. "We wanted a place with a small-town vibe but not too small," Jim says. "I've always hated commuting, so now I ride my bike to work. It's the perfect place to raise a family."
Services Offered
Heyo Myo provides a range of services, including dry needling, myofascial release, pregnancy massage, cupping, remedial massage, and chronic pain coaching. Jim believes that March 11, the start of Australian Healthcare Week, is an ideal time to encourage people to get moving and take charge of their health.
"If you're struggling with pain, joint or muscle dysfunction, visit Heyo Myo or call 0418 472 033 for more information," Jim invites. "Let's get moving and embrace a healthier, happier life."
In a world where specialization is often the norm, Jim O'Connell's myotherapy practice stands as a testament to the power of holistic healing. His journey from sports-injured teenager to a healer in a coastal haven is a fascinating tale of discovery and the transformative potential of a hands-on approach to healthcare.
