US Flu Season 2025-26: New Strain, High Cases, and Expert Warnings (2026)

A new flu strain is causing a surge in US cases, with experts warning that the season is far from over. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 18 million Americans have fallen ill with influenza so far in the 2025–26 season, resulting in 230,000 hospitalisations and 9,300 deaths. The influenza A H3N2 virus, a subtype historically associated with more severe illness, has dominated the flu season. However, a vaccine mismatch may reduce its effectiveness against infection, though vaccination still provides protection against severe disease. The flu season has been particularly severe for children, with 15 flu-associated deaths recorded among kids in the week ending January 10, bringing the total paediatric toll to 32. Health authorities warn that older adults above 65, pregnant women, young children under five, and people with chronic diseases remain the most vulnerable to severe illness. Doctors continue to urge all Americans aged six months and older to get vaccinated, as the flu season is far from over.
